The Art of Aging is all about healthy aging through engagement in arts and learning.  We will celebrate this connection with a special event featuring Bob Cilman, Director of the Young at Heart chorus, musical guests from our community, including The Carousel Quartet, and a showing of the highly acclaimed film, Young@Heart

Cilman leads a chorus of songsters who delight audiences, and themselves, with songs from later generations (James Brown, Talking Heads, among others).  The event, scheduled for 3:30 Sunday afternoon, November 16 at the Whittenberger Auditorium at IU, and continues at 5:30 pm with a reception at The University Club at the Indiana Memorial Union.

This event is about how creative and community engagement affects people’s lives as they encounter challenges of aging. Information about the choir and the film is available at www.foxsearchlight.com/youngatheart. The humor, music and emotional experience of Young@Heart have moved audiences throughout the country.

Tickets are $10 for the Art of Aging event, only ($7 for seniors and children under 12), and $25 for the event and the reception that follows at the University Club of the Indiana Memorial Union. The reception includes wine, beer and food provided by Bloomingfoods, Uptown Cafe, and FARM Bloomington.

As an added bonus, on Thursday evening, November 6, we’ll host a free lecture by renowned IU School of Medicine physician and humanist Dr. Richard Gunderman at the Monroe County Public Library, followed by a reception.  He will speak on “The Art of Living a Long, Healthy, and Full Life.”  Dr. Gunderman is a six-time recipient of the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award, the Lieber All-University Award for Teaching Excellence, and numerous other accolades.  He is author of the new book, We Make a Life by What We Give, and well-known for his inspirational lectures.

Art of Mental Health is a benefit for Mental Health America (MHA) of Monroe County, which provides information and services for people with mental health needs, including Therapist Referral, support and advocacy groups for individuals, families and friends of people with mental distress and illness, and the Jail Diversion Program.

Support for the Art of Mental Health and Young@Heart comes from Lilly Education Fund, Bloomingfoods, Janet Maclean fund of the School of HPER at Indiana University, Bloomington Hospital, and 20th Century Fox.
